One year after committing triple murder Chris Watts says he’s tormented by what’s he’s done – he’s not

Just one month ago – literally one month ago – on July 16th, Oxygen reported on Watts’ attitude to critics. This is what he said:

You may recall six months ago, when Coder, Lee and Baumhover went down to Dodge Prison in Wisconsin, Watts had already forgiven himself. Thanks to God. This is what he said:

It doesn’t sound like a guy that’s tormented by anything does it? In fact, Watts was so casual talking about what he did to his family, that has tormented the lead Detective into quitting. On his first morning back from that interview, Baumhover broke down sobbing, at his kitchen table. This was the first time Baumhover’s wife had ever seen him cry. If anyone’s torment in this case is real, it’s Baumhover’s.

One year after the Christopher Watts case

He’s quit his job becuase of the Watts case. He’s isolated himself. Watts is entertaining flocks of female fans and apparently working on a book.

Compare that to Watts who minutes after murdering and burying the bodies of his family, managed to work side-by-side with his colleagues, none of them suspecting anything. His Sermon on the Porch is Exhibit A in how nonchalant Watts was. Of all the people involved, including Nichol Kessinger, it’s fair to say Watts appeared to care the least about what had actually happened.

True remorse is when you shed a tear. When the emotion isn’t just visible, but visibly overwhelming. That’s the first part of it. True grief is when you’re honest about what you’ve done. The honesty exposes the grief, the true, real, raw emotions. You can’t have one without the other. We’ve never seen Watts truly break down. Although some will argue this point, we’ve never seen Watts be completely honest either. Probably, he doesn’t know how.

The word forgive appears four times in the CBI Report. Watts even claimed that while he was murdering Shan’ann, she was praying for his forgiveness. If that’s not sick and twisted – and this is months after the incident, when he’s had time to figure things out – I don’t know what is. But it’s not the first time I’ve seen a murderer offer clemency to himself on behalf of his permanently silenced victim, the person he silenced.

Watts is a liar and a murderer x three. He will always be. He lied to everyone. Please don’t be so naive to ever believe a murderer’s lies. Not all liars are murderers, but mark my works, all murderers are liars, through and through.

      I don’t think prayers work that way…

CW’s behaviour before, during, and after the crime has had us all perplexed, and I guess that’s why there’s still so much interest in this crime. I initially thought that whatever was in those patches may have affected his mentality, or just being in lust with NK skewed his thinking, but now I’ve come to believe that he must have truly and deeply hated Shan’ann and his children (and the life he was living) in order to dispose of them the way he did and show no remorse since. I know most here will say “No sh*t Sherlock. Of course he hated her”, but what I’m getting at is that there are different levels of hate. Over time I believe he came to despise her and most likely started to feel that way about his children too (the chicken nuggets comment was out of the blue and very telling). My guess is that his lack of emotion stems from his relief at no longer having to live the life he was living with his wife and children. A normal person would have either tried to set boundaries within the marriage, or realized it wasn’t working and walked away. His lack of skills in dealing with confrontation was his, and his family’s, undoing. I guess what I take away from this is that children need to be taught how to stand up for themselves and be able to deal with conflict and resolution in a healthy way. Perhaps the dynamics in CW’s childhood did sow the seed for what was to come.

I don’t know, I think most people feel bad if they kill someone even if they hated them at the time or even if it was an actual self-defense. They’ll start drinking, soldiers get PTSD, husbands kill themselves etc. Most people (luckily) just can’t and don’t want to do it. I don’t think he hated his kids, I think they were merely annoying, which is almost worse somehow. Like how most people swat a fly away is how I imagine he felt about the whole thing.

You are absolutely right Geoff! Deep resentment can lead to horrible outcomes. It’s hard to believe that it could result in something this extreme, but after reading about and observing Chris Watts’ attitude and the comments he made after he confessed and was incarcerated, it’s easy to see that there is a sense of relief in his life. All three of the family members that he murdered were treated as one in my view..a suffocating, medical and financial burden who were constantly reprimanding him, and treating him as if he had “no game”.

I believe, as I did in the Scott Peterson case, that he didn’t murder his wife and children to be with his mistress. It was to get back the freedom that he once knew and longed for. Nicole Kessinger wasn’t his soulmate, she was a representation of freedom. You gotta love these born again Christian jailbirds, who seek God, and are only remorseful because they have nothing to distract them away from the reality of their lives and hardships.

I agree with Nick, he’s a liar to the core. Because he can’t be truthful to himself and what transpired in his life, he cannot be forgiven by God, his victims, and most of all himself. He forgave himself the minute he planned and carried out the murder of his wife and children. He honestly thinks we will believe that Shan’ann was praying and forgiving him as he was strangling and killing her? After she found out there was someone else in his life, that he didn’t want the baby and she would be raising three kids on her own? Where was God then Chris? Why didn’t you seek God’s help when you were in financial trouble, when your wife was making your life unbearable, and your children were too much for you to handle? No way in hell is he sorry, nor will be forgiven.

Lastly, how ironic is it that now he says it doesn’t matter what people think, it only matters what God thinks, when he was so worried that his coworkers, friends, investigators, and society would think badly of him during the investigation? He continues to hide who he really is as he did in the Thrive videos, in refereeing the squabbles between his parents and his wife, and in desperately trying to portray the perfect husband, father, son, son-in-law, employee, friend, and boyfriend. Judging himself by how others perceive him, leaves no room for self reflection, truth, or forgiveness.

As I said to someone above, I truly believe he felt the same way we do when we swat away a fly, and that’s essentially what the whole thing was. He didn’t HATE his kids, his kids annoyed him. He hated Shanaan sure, but I can really see him doing the same thing with other people inserted there instead of the people it was. He would never have been a serial killer or a mass shooter, but I can see him doing what he did to other people cause he can’t be honest with himself or other people and got into a jam.

Can anyone think of another person to compare him to? A lot of family annihilators have no criminal history but we learn they were controlling and/or abusive (think Josh Powell, Tim Jones) or really narcissistic (think Jeffrey MacDonald, Scott Peterson) but Watts is not like any of them. He isn’t a clinical psychopath like Peterson but he’s also the most cold-hearted, emotionally vapid person I’ve ever seen.

P.S that is terrible about Baumhover. The poor guy is traumatized, yet another Watts victim. I hope he gets help-he was really good at his job.
