Did Watts Know Shan’ann’s iPhone Password – and what it means

On the face of it, Watts appears to be the dumbest high-profile criminal in true crime history. And yet he defeated the cops in many areas in terms of the crime scene. We still don’t know where the crimes were committed, or when, why, and we’re not 100% sure how they were committed. Nothing of value came out of the autopsy reports either.

There’s also uncertainty about how the bodies of the girls were dumped. Could they really have fitted through those tight orifices below the thief hatches without breaking bones? The only way to definitely test for this possibility is to use the cadaver of a similarly sized animal…

One of the dumbest mistakes Watts appeared to make was his story. His story was that his family had vanished, and also that Shan’ann had taken the kids on a play date, or gone somewhere to decompress after an argument. He didn’t seem sure which story to go with, and none of it held water in the context of her car, purse, medication and phone all being at home.

But what if her phone hadn’t been found at the scene?

What if, prior to the murders, Watts had what he thought was a surefire way of getting away with murder. If he had Shan’ann’s phone [her lifeline] he could artificially keep her alive by having her check in on Facebook and via messages to his phone. He might delay things for a few hours, perhaps longer.

Did Watts know about her 10:00 doctor’s appointment?

Since Shan’ann was always on her phone, many could easily but wrongly assume she was somewhere virtually when she wasn’t. For example the 02:30 purchase may have been an early part of the ruse intended to make Shan’ann appear alive and well [and shopping] when she wasn’t.

Much of this theory rests on the idea that Watts believed he knew Shan’ann’s password, but after he murdered her, he found out she’d changed it.fullscreen capture 20190106 151710-002

We know when the phone was turned on, Watts claimed not to know the password, which seemed a tad unusual, whereas Nickole knew it [ditto]. Watts also knew the password to Shan’ann’s laptop, although seemed reluctant to give that up. He claimed he had the username to their online bank account, but not the passcode.

We also know Watts had a sophisticated knowledge, via the Secret Calculator app, for keeping streategically valuable data secret, and knew the importance of keeping a secret password for that data.

fullscreen capture 20181204 195310

Since Shan’ann was using his Facebook [and perhaps borrowed his phone to post messages], it’s conceivable that they were one of those couples who had easy access to one another’s phones [and passwords]. Furthermore, the Secret Calculator app seemed designed to defeat someone who was given access to his phone, and we know Shan’ann did have access to his phone, because she knew messages he’d sent to his father had been deleted in early August.

Shan’ann told Addy Molony on August 9 that she hadn’t looked through his phone. But what if that was his plan? To use her phone after she was dead to throw the investigation off track, just as Frazee allegedly did with Kelsey Berreth’s phone. What if that was the plan, but once Shan’ann was dead, Watts realized the phone was of no use because she’d changed the damn password…

Although in the June 2017 timeline this image below is from September 3rd, 2016. Presumably during this period, Shan’ann’s parents were living with them for several months in Colorado. It was during this time that Sandi met and took a job working for Nickole Atkinson as a hairdresser. That’s how Shan’ann and Nickole met, through Sandi’s hairdressing job. 18446801_10154523050251935_2117522143365812760_n18485830_10154524743506935_734789507525147919_n18486297_10154533734476935_2497756100767994903_n18519551_10154534024626935_1360974470732176606_n18765934_10154579980456935_8963803286504885869_n18813354_10154571659616935_7556502813591948446_n18813574_10154588032246935_5156396501716783488_n18836930_10154584865561935_4654483182428610220_o18839222_10154588099621935_6908836805465221745_n18881809_10154587895556935_4550959708284434124_n18882081_10154571500906935_5806635218009764793_n18893298_10154595344851935_3690413503819147605_n18920164_10154583826356935_1454385732491708280_n18920253_10154588032231935_2843152078314983590_n18921900_10154594852621935_3570687320991411473_n18922195_10154578086136935_2692005662757163396_n18922200_10154603119866935_3295456617780060391_n18922216_10154587521396935_4934601135234885623_n18951200_10154593354166935_8555539619035058177_n18951209_10154594851836935_5021166226496079624_n18952524_10154605018636935_7848631725678430524_n18952571_10154603218151935_5280222749316254981_n18952856_10154598750026935_8744907578136438383_n18953068_10154606924361935_455693836185288061_n19029585_10154594907476935_9086782398261248486_n19029727_10154603119941935_7871286417305308672_n19030373_10154602065526935_7720760333142097493_n19030488_10154607476346935_7713948743567762317_n19059175_10154599730881935_7372119686494346402_n19059621_10154612337041935_4924847568206161487_n19105873_10154613151056935_6865284383711927461_n19105946_10154614912861935_1819971734180000721_n19146017_10154614912816935_7635166486432707264_n19146188_10154603119871935_8279146180158366774_n19247585_10154642017611935_7084245379700094005_n19248050_10154629113731935_8251200739955791711_n19248085_10154645967496935_520085349232113801_n19260227_10154632696181935_2309206133375362308_n19366204_10154621886231935_4850853197260025311_n19397005_10154629893566935_2876858652843933639_n19399356_10154638887996935_7739769539632628506_n19399475_10154634065596935_8935427165539562183_n19399853_10154644321311935_3592505146879620372_n19420470_10154639406911935_2545800544171006695_n19420638_10154640766786935_2548202860232453195_n19424094_10154646189666935_2375266800156931582_n19424170_10154646074976935_9077229261337819776_n19424537_10154633895646935_360334398183551242_n19430039_10154652666636935_8233951660999406396_n19430098_10154641450786935_3770972127189136851_n19510085_10154646390121935_3258642419841261185_n19510101_10154650554636935_7229678929851497214_n19511317_10154646189671935_7801068655792212157_n19554565_10154658667276935_7465522500877904660_n

Hands up – do you believe Watts and Shan’ann “talked” on the morning before she was murdered?

There is no way to definitively “prove” that a conversation did or didn’t take place early in the morning of August 13. The best we can do is look into the dynamics and see what is likely. This may seem like a weak and uncertain investigative technique, but it’s not.

While researching DRILLING FOR DISCOVERY, the 5th book in the ongoing TWO FACE series, I started cross-referencing Watts’ early statements, including to the FBI, with Shan’ann’s references to the word “talk”.

The word “talk” appears more than 350 times in the Discovery Documents, and many are requests from Shan’ann that her husband talk to her. But he doesn’t. This resistance to talking to her gains momentum towards the last days and hours of her life, and in fact one of her last minutes to him on Sunday night is:

Sorry I bothered you. I just wanted to talk to you.

Below are a few of those instances:

fullscreen capture 20190108 162153fullscreen capture 20190108 191117fullscreen capture 20190108 162200fullscreen capture 20190108 165325fullscreen capture 20190108 170430fullscreen capture 20190108 170444fullscreen capture 20190108 170504fullscreen capture 20190108 170537

Once the murders take place, Watts suddenly tells everyone he “talked” to Shan’ann. He woke her up and he talked to her. Not only did he talk to her, she went to sleep afterwards, and then – apparently – Shan’ann got emotional afterwards and disappeared in a huff.

It’s only when you know the dynamics leading up to the murders, that you can see he wanted to avoid talking to Shan’ann till the last moment, and at the last moment he didn’t talk to her, he murdered her.fullscreen capture 20181224 062911

Did Watts Switch Shan’ann’s Phone Cover at the last Second?

Today, while researching the timeline for DRILLING THROUGH DISCOVERY, the 5th TWO FACE book, I paid particular attention to the moment Shan’ann’s phone was found. The discovery was made by Nick Atkinson, but occurs [not surprisingly] off-camera when Coonrod is as far away from the loft area as he could possible be.

Nevertheless I wanted to review the moment. According to the Discovery Documents, when Coonrod enters the basement at 14:11, that’s also when Watts texts Shan’ann a staged message:

Where are you?

About two minutes later, after mounting two flights of stairs, Coonrod finds Watts in the loft area, alone but with Atkinson’s kid skulking around. Nickole, meanwhile, is downstairs.

At 14:12/13 they announce that Shan’ann’s phone has been found, which is a big deal to Nickole who is just coming up the stairs and starting to really panic. The phone is found shutdown, and has a green protective cover around it. Watts then pretends not to know the password to open up the phone.

The color of the phone surprised me because it appeared to be pink in other screengrabs. Did Watts secretly swap out the pink cover at the last second, because it may have been contaminated with DNA/blood/fibers? Or was the cover removed during Shan’ann’s final life and death tussle? Or did he simply remove the cover to wash it and never got round to replacing it? Or did he remove the cover so that if seen outside the house it may not have been immediately recognizable as her phone?

“This is really an embarrassment for…”

Prison Consultant Larry Levine describes Chris Watts as an embarrassment for the Colorado Department of Corrections. Do you think that’s accurate? Levine’s right, Watts is an embarrassment and an inconvenience, but I doubt it has anything to do with the inadequacy of the prison setup in Colorado.

It also doesn’t have much to do with keeping one of America’s most notorious inmates anonymous inside the prison. Are you telling me the same prison where Watts is, where Steven Avery is housed doesn’t know Steven Avery is there?

Elsewhere in the same interview Levine sounds as if he’s on track before he ends up saying something else:

The impact of this case has reached so far into the people of Colorado…[wait for it]…that they’re concerned about…their own staff members possibly assaulting him…

Was Watts’ safety the primary concern for his transfer, or were other concerns of primary concern?

For reference, Aurora mass shooter James Holmes is currently incarcerated at USP Allenwood in Pennsylvania.

First Image of the Trinastich Surveillance Camera

Officer Scott Coonrod turned his bodycam off when Detective Baumhover pulled up at 14:35, so the two could have a discreet tete-a-tete. Unfortunately, by the time Coonrod turned it back on he was already under the alcove and approaching the door of neighbor Nate Trinastich’s house.

This is why we don’t see the surveillance camera.

I did manage to catch this grab from the video below. The color of the face-brick and orientation looks about right. I asked the maker of the film directly if he zoomed in to get this image, and if he had the original image [perhaps less zoomed in] at which point he stopped communicating.

fullscreen capture 20190106 151737

It could be that the area highlighted below, which shows a reflection of Coonrod as he approaches Trinastich’s front door, is the location of the surveillance video.

Nichol Kessinger asked Watts: “Is your lifestyle sustainable?”

My impression, both on this site and the social media I’ve seen, is that folks are so busy trashing Nichol Kessinger, they’re no longer trying to figure out what insight she provides into Watts and Shan’ann.

Just prior to the two minute mark in the clip below, Kessinger covers a particularly murky area in the Watts case – the family finances. The mistress was privy to the Watts’ financial set up, but like everyone else, she was only provided a limited view.

Eventually [not knowing about their bankruptcy in 2015], Kessinger asked Watts:

“Is your lifestyle sustainable?”

If Shan’ann had been asked the same question [by anyone], how would she have answered?

https://youtu.be/vMvawixE_v8

https://youtu.be/kx8XfjTek6k

At 01:14 Kessinger is asked she ever saw Watts’ bedroom basement setup.

KESSINGER: Yeah, I went down there and saw his little…work out equipment, and there’s a bed down there…all set up. It’s all clean and organized. Um…like a decent bed setup.
